Do you worry about other people’s opinions?
You would not be unusual if you do!
You tell folk about your grand plan, and instead of congratulations and huzzahs, you get a stream of cold water!
But when you take a closer look at this, just how much are those opinions worth?
If they’re an expert in the field you’re discussing, then - yes, you need to listen … but you DON’T need to agree!
And if they’re a well-meaning friend or relative, it’s most likely they have no expertise to talk about, and they’re simply worried that if you follow the path you’re suggesting, they may in some way lose you.
Who’s giving the opinion?
So you need to look carefully at who is giving the opinion, and what their motives are!
That expert, for instance, may be genuine in their thoughts about how suited you are to the work, OR they may be thinking that they don’t want you moving onto their patch as competition, so will try to dissuade you.
That friend may be thinking they’ll be left behind if you make great strides forward. They may be worried you’ll look down on them, not value their friendship any more.
The family member may be concerned that you’ll have no income and become a burden.
How do these opinions measure up against your desires?
Just how strong is your desire to change your life?
How much are you going to be dissuaded by others who - after all - are not living your life?
When it comes down to it, you’re the only one whose opinion really matters.
So thank these people kindly for their views, discard what doesn’t fit with your ideals, and move forward boldly!
