What is really holding you back?

What’s really holding you back

You’ve got all these ideas, these plans … a new career, writing a book, starting a business, moving house … but it’s not happening!

What is holding you back? What’s really getting in your way?

It’s more than probably one of those fears again! This time, fear of the unknown.

Fear of the unknown can hold you in thrall.

But the future is always unknown! Whatever we do, the outcome is unknown.

There’s only one way to find out what’s coming - and that’s to experience it!

How do I know?

Well, I had ideas - course I did - same as you have ideas. Longings, plans, places you’d love to be, things you’d love to work at. And whenever I thought of a new idea, that voice in my head would say “YOU are kidding!”

I thought I was strong and bold. I thought I could do things. But gradually my resolve got whittled away. Other things took precedence. I was staying just where I was.

I didn’t realise that there was this fear nagging me in the back of my head. All the times I’d been told, “CAREFUL, you’ll fall” had made solid paths in my mind for my thoughts to follow. Always caving in.

All that time I thought I was being clever, prudent, thoughtful … in reality I was just being pulled by the tail to stay where I was.

But of course I wouldn’t be here now if I’d continued to think that way! I had to face down that fear to get where I wanted to be.

So the first thing I had to do was identify the fear in my head. I had to find out what I was telling myself!

Then I sniffed about to find out who was backing these ideas up, agreeing with my fearful voice. It can often be hard to separate the real from the false. You know that old saw - False Evidence Appearing Real = FEAR. See if there’s really any truth in what you’re hearing.

Despatch the FEAR!

So then, armed with the knowledge of this fearful voice, you can recognise it for what it is! This is what you need to do in order to kick it into the dust.

You can arm yourself with responses: listen, and say, “Thanks, but I’ve got this.”

And you can say the very same to the people in your life who are echoing that fear! Your nearest and dearest may be holding you back because they’re afraid you may change and leave them behind.  So lots of reassurance may be needed, that you still care for them.

When I’m coaching people, I help them to feel stronger about asserting themselves kindly, in pursuit of what they really want. No-one wants to be a brash bully!

Now you’ve located that sneaky voice, you can kick it out!
