More on pernicious perfectionism!
I was talking to you about the false idea many people hold about perfectionism, mistaking this sinister trait for a good thing! You can read it here.
And this manifests a lot in holding something back - something that you know would be serving you best if published - and released into the wild!
So if you make this THING then want to hold it back and fru-fru it up a bit more, and put it away, then get it out and look at it, and so on …
.. what does this mean?
The official name for this is perfectionism. But sadly, people think that’s a good thing! They think seeking perfection is laudable and they should not publish or release anything till it’s … perfect!
But here’s the thing:
Nothing will ever be perfect.
Sure, you want to do your best - you want to be sure your thing is right, accurate, correct, the best it can be. You don’t want to put rubbish out there! But there comes a time when you have to accept that you have done all you can - and LET IT OUT!
By the way, this is something we look at critically in my Brilliant Family Dog Trainer Business Program. That nothing is ever going to happen if we don’t do our best, then get it out there!
You see, another name you can give this behaviour - this “perfectionism” - is “making excuses”.
You’re hiding behind this plan of making everything perfect and you’re not actually getting anything done! Because the design is not absolutely perfect you’re not putting your flyers out there and no-one knows your business or service exists! You think your work needs permission to be put out! This isn’t a school project!
No-one has to approve it but YOU
You are hoarding all your knowledge and experience and wisdom, and you’re not letting anyone benefit from even a little bit of it! You’re keeping it to yourself. Your excuse is that it’s not ready yet.
The fact is you’re afraid of taking the plunge!
It’s called FEAR
It’s behind so much of what holds us back.
Clients tell me all the time that they lack confidence, and that’s another way of saying they’re afraid of doing what they’d dearly love to do.
They dress up this fear and call it perfectionism or lack of confidence, or that they haven’t yet got enough qualifications,
… the list goes on.
But what it comes down to is FEAR.
Fear of what?
😰 Fear of the unknown.
😰 Fear of looking foolish.
😰 Fear of antagonism.
😰 Fear of failure.
😰 Fear of success …
There are so many fears that can bubble up and stifle us but let’s see them for what they are!
Don’t give them an acceptable name like “perfectionism”.
Don’t let yourself off the hook by appearing to be extra-diligent! Get yourself out there!
Whether you are wanting to build your career, start dating, begin a new business - even a new hobby or pastime - whatever it is you want to achieve, ditch the “perfectionism”. Chuck out the excuses and get it out there, “warts and all”!
Have you ever wondered why others get things done and you just seem to watch in awe while you tread water?
Can you see that this fear may be at work in the background?
Can you see it’s simply down to the fears you’ve accumulated in your life?
This is why I LOVE working as a Transition Coach - I see people realising that they can actually achieve what they want when they face down their fears.
Deep down, you know what you can do.
You know you have something to offer the world.
Are you going to let it slide another ten years until your perfectionism tells you you’re too old? (That’s another one I hear … of course you’re not too old!)
