Don’t believe everything you think!
Why?
Because your brain is lying!
Listen to what it’s saying and scrutinise the statement before swallowing it whole.
How can you do this?
Capture the thought that you are mindlessly accepting as truth.
WRITE IT DOWN. Yes. Put it on paper - expose it!
Now look at it. Is it true? Is it absolutely true?
How does it make you feel?
What could you think instead?
Got it? Let’s look at an example of this exercise:
“I’m no good at playing the piano.”
This could be my knee-jerk response to someone who mentions music.
Is this true?
Partly true. I’m a poor player
Is it absolutely true?
No, I can play a bit
How does this thought make me feel?
Hopeless - I’ll never be any good
What could I think instead?
I enjoy playing the piano, I can practice and get better. I play to please myself.
How would the new thought make me feel?
Much better! I can enjoy my playing without guilt or comparisonitis.
Now you try!
What beastly thought pops out at you regularly?
Run through this exercise and let us know what you found. You could just show us your misbelief first, then your new thought! That would be fun to read!
