How can I make the best use of what I already know for my new career?
Worried about how to make your new career a success when there’s so much to learn?
And are you worried that you’ll waste the time and money you invested in your prior learning? It cost a lot to learn your previous subject, and you don’t want to think it will all be lost.
But, EXPERIENCE COUNTS! You’ll never waste learning.
A magpie!
I’m a bit of a magpie. I love to explore new things! So it’s natural for me to explore new ways to spend my time - and to make a living.
This has led to what some may consider a bit of a zigzag career!
But it’s a life-path that has brought me much satisfaction as I learn new things for each new venture. And every time I start something new I have ALL the learning inside me already! So much of what you need is adaptable to a new circumstance - in fact it’s essential basics.
So nothing you learn is EVER wasted.
Daily learning
The thing is, learning happens every day
If you’re alive, you’re learning!
And what you learn in your everyday life should be applicable to your work. Otherwise, what’s it all about? You don’t want a huge disconnect between ‘real life’ and how you spend the majority of your waking hours!
Learning to work with colleagues for instance, to understand how they tick, how to encourage and foster their learning - is vital to any enterprise!
And that’s one of the things I love doing with new clients - showing them how to understand their own energetic responses and those of others.
Learning a subject means learning how to learn. And learning how to learn is critical to being able to absorb all the information that is thrown at us all the time.
We need to develop methods of prioritisation so we can find what is most appropriate for us to learn.
Is that course you’re thinking of doing, the one you need right now? Or is it promising things you can’t possibly attain because you haven’t got the basics? A course in Advanced Rock-climbing would be no help to me till I’ve done some Simple Rock-climbing!
Learning for the new setup!
Now, once we know how to learn we can adapt that learning to any situation
Ask yourself what you already know, and how you can incorporate this into what you need to know in your new situation. I’ll bet that the experience you have amassed over the years is going to transfer straight into your new work!
You may have worked with different systems before - but if you understand systems you can adapt your knowledge to the new system you’re going to be working with.
No learning is ever wasted. No experience ever lost. It all goes into making us who we are. And building our massive value in the workplace!
It’s part of YOU
Can you see how everything you’ve done in your life up to now is an intrinsic part of you?
Can you see how you have unique gifts that you can impart to others?
And can you see that learning new stuff for your new position will be a doddle, once you incorporate your history of knowing how to learn into it?
And can you see how your confidence will grow when you can analyse just what skills you already have and how you can cope well with your new ambitions?
The thing is, you KNOW this, but sometimes it’s hard to implement. Your brain is telling you you can’t do it, you don’t know enough, you’ll fail - and so on and so on.
