Practice makes perfect - are you sure?

The old saying goes:

Practice makes Perfect

BUT in fact that’s a nonsense!

If you’re practising the wrong thing, it will be “Practice makes Imperfect”.

If you’re practising badly, it’ll be “Practice makes Worse”.

It’s all to do with what you’re actually DOING, rather than how much you do it!

  • So if you practice a faulty tennis stroke, you’ll get very good at doing it wrong!

  • If you nurture poor thoughts about yourself, you’re going to get more and more down in your confidence and self-belief.

  • And always remember my maxim:

What you focus on is what you get

The more you keep your thoughts directed in one way, the more that will become your default pattern. You’ll be busily “practising” this thought, this idea, to such an extent that you’ll no longer be able to see that it’s the WRONG thought! The WRONG idea!

Practice makes Permanent

This is the truth of the matter. Practice makes Permanent. What you do every day, all the time, becomes your permanent way of doing it.

Being on your guard to see what unhelpful habits have slipped into your life, whether it’s nibbling biscuits in bed or telling yourself you’re useless, is essential to inspecting them and ruthlessly turfing out what does not serve you!

Practising those habits will make them stronger.

Practice makes Permanent!

Sometimes it can be hard to see what’s damaging in your life without someone looking over your shoulder and pointing it out.

That’s not a failing! Everyone who succeeds on the world stage has coaches, mentors, advisors - whether they’re sports stars, Prime Ministers, or captains of industry.

They are sensible enough to know they can’t do it alone, and are glad of the guidance they can get from someone who’s been there already and knows the pitfalls to avoid.

Having someone in your corner is invaluable!
